Esim Khan

d. 1628 · 17th century

Esim Khan was khan of the Kazakhs from 1598 to 1628, succeeding his brother Tauekel Khan. He kept most of the Syr Darya towns his brother had taken from the Bukharan Shaybanids, with Turkistan as his main seat, and fought a long contest with his rival Tursun Khan of Tashkent, whom he finally defeated. Kazakh tradition credits him with the body of customary law known as "the old road of Esim Khan".
