General War Commissariat

17th century–1723 · 17th century · Also known as Generalkriegskommissariat

The General War Commissariat (Generalkriegskommissariat) was a central authority of Brandenburg-Prussia that grew up under the Great Elector to supply and finance the standing army. Levying taxes across the Hohenzollern lands from Cleves to Prussia, it became the main instrument of central administration, and in 1723 Frederick William I merged it with the General Finance Directory into the General Directory.
