Great Abatis Line
The Great Abatis Line was a defensive line of felled trees, earthworks and forts built by Muscovy in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries to protect its southern lands from Crimean Tatar raids. Running for hundreds of kilometres south of Moscow through towns such as Tula, it was later superseded by the Belgorod Line further south.
