Hecataeus of Miletus

c. 550–c. 476 BCE · 6th century BCE

Hecataeus of Miletus was an early Greek historian and geographer. His Periodos Ges, a description of the known world arranged as a coastal voyage, and his Genealogies, which treated myths critically, survive only in fragments quoted by later writers. He took part in the deliberations of the Ionian Revolt and was a major source and model for Herodotus.
