Hermopolis

Also known as Khemenu, el-Ashmunein, Hermopolis Magna

Hermopolis, ancient Egyptian Khemenu and modern el-Ashmunein, was a city in Middle Egypt and the chief cult centre of Thoth, god of wisdom and writing. Its priests taught a creation myth of eight primordial gods, the Ogdoad. In the 8th century BCE it was the seat of King Nimlot, whom the Kushite king Piye besieged, and in Roman times it was a large provincial city.
