Middle Egypt

Middle Egypt is the stretch of the Nile valley between the Delta and Thebes, roughly from Memphis to Asyut, including the Fayum and cities such as Herakleopolis and Hermopolis. In periods of division it often formed its own power base: the Herakleopolitan kings held it in the First Intermediate Period, and in the 8th century BCE local kings such as Nimlot of Hermopolis ruled there.
