Jagat Seth
Jagat Seth, meaning 'banker of the world', was the hereditary title of a Marwari banking family based at Murshidabad in Bengal, granted by the Mughal emperor in 1723. The family managed the Bengal mint and revenue remittances and lent to nawabs and the East India Company alike. Its head Mahtab Chand joined the plot with Mir Jafar and Robert Clive that led to the defeat of Siraj ud-Daulah at Plassey in 1757.
