Kanhoji Angre

1669–1729 · 18th century

Kanhoji Angre was the commander of the Maratha navy in the early 18th century, based at Kolaba and the sea forts of the Konkan coast such as Vijaydurg. He seized merchant ships of the English East India Company and other powers that refused his passes and beat off English and Portuguese attacks on his forts. Europeans called him a pirate, but he made the Marathas a naval power on India's west coast.
