Livius Andronicus

c. 284–c. 204 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Also known as Lucius Livius Andronicus

Livius Andronicus was a Greek from Tarentum who became the first known Latin poet and dramatist. Brought to Rome probably as a captive, he translated Homer's Odyssey into Latin verse, and in 240 BCE he staged the first Latin play adapted from a Greek original. His work began the Roman tradition of literature modelled on Greek forms.
