Livingstonia

1875 · 19th century

Livingstonia is a town in northern Malawi that grew from the Free Church of Scotland mission named after David Livingstone. The mission was founded at Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi in 1875 and moved to the high plateau above the lake in 1894 under Robert Laws. Its schools, including the Overtoun Institution, trained many of the first educated leaders of colonial Malawi, and the mission had strong influence among the northern Ngoni.
