Mahmud Gawan

1411–1481 · 15th century · Also known as Khwaja Mahmud Gawan

Mahmud Gawan was a Persian merchant from Gilan who became chief minister of the Bahmani Sultanate of the Deccan, serving from the 1460s until 1481. He reorganised the provinces and revenue system, led campaigns that extended Bahmani territory to the west coast, including the capture of Goa, and founded a large madrasa at Bidar. Accused of treason through a forged letter, he was executed on the orders of Muhammad Shah III in 1481.
