Mamikonian dynasty
The Mamikonian family was one of the most powerful noble houses of ancient and early medieval Armenia, holding the hereditary office of commander-in-chief (sparapet) under the Arsacid kings. Its members led the Armenian defence of Christianity against Sasanian Persia, most famously Vardan Mamikonian, killed at the Battle of Avarayr in 451. The family declined after failed revolts against Arab rule in the 8th century.
