Medina Elvira
Medina Elvira (Madinat Ilbira) was a city of al-Andalus near modern Atarfe, north-west of Granada, and the capital of the Elvira district under the Umayyads. It grew near Roman Iliberri, where the Council of Elvira met in the early 4th century. In the civil wars after 1009 its people moved, under the Zirid leader Zawi ibn Ziri, to the more defensible hill of Granada, which replaced it as the regional centre.
