Ohkay Owingeh

Also known as San Juan Pueblo

Ohkay Owingeh, formerly San Juan Pueblo, is a Tewa pueblo on the Rio Grande north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1598 Juan de Oñate made it the first headquarters of the Spanish colony of New Mexico, naming it San Juan de los Caballeros. It was the home of Popé, the religious leader who organised the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and it restored its original Tewa name in 2005.
