Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe was founded around 1610 by the Spanish governor Pedro de Peralta as the capital of the province of New Mexico, on the northern frontier of New Spain. Pueblo rebels drove the Spanish out in 1680, and Diego de Vargas reoccupied it in 1692. It remained the capital under Mexico and then the United States.
