Santa Hermandad

1476 · 15th century · Also known as Holy Brotherhood

The Santa Hermandad, or Holy Brotherhood, was a peacekeeping force created by Isabella I and Ferdinand II at the Cortes of Madrigal in 1476, built on the older brotherhoods of Castilian towns. Paid for by local levies, it pursued robbers and rebels in the countryside and helped restore royal order after years of civil war. Reduced to a rural police after 1498, it survived until 1835.
