Olympia
Olympia was a sanctuary of Zeus in the western Peloponnese, in the valley of the Alpheios in Elis, where the Olympic Games were held, traditionally from 776 BCE. Its sacred precinct, the Altis, contained the Temple of Zeus with Phidias's gold and ivory statue, one of the Seven Wonders, and the Temple of Hera. Control of it was disputed between Elis and Pisa, and later the Arcadians.
