Otto of Greece

1815–1867 · 19th century · Also known as King Otto of Greece

Otto of Greece was a Bavarian prince, son of King Ludwig I, chosen by Britain, France and Russia at the London Conference of 1832 as the first king of modern Greece. He ruled at first through Bavarian regents and resisted constitutional limits until the revolt of 1843 forced him to grant a constitution. A further uprising deposed him in 1862, and he died in exile in Bavaria.
