Patara

Patara was a port city of ancient Lycia, near the mouth of the Xanthos river in south-western Turkey. It had a famous oracle of Apollo and was a meeting place of the Lycian League, whose council chamber (bouleuterion) has been restored. Under Roman rule it was the seat of the governor of Lycia, and tradition makes it the birthplace of Saint Nicholas.
