Person
Pietro Giannone
Pietro Giannone (1676–1748) was a Neapolitan jurist and historian. His Civil History of the Kingdom of Naples (1723) traced the growth of church power in the kingdom and attacked the temporal claims of the papacy. Excommunicated, he went into exile, and in 1736 he was lured into Savoyard territory and arrested; he died a prisoner in Turin, while his work influenced Enlightenment critics of the church.
