Poets of the Princes

12th–14th centuries · 12th century · Also known as Gogynfeirdd

The Poets of the Princes, in Welsh Gogynfeirdd, were the court poets of the native Welsh rulers from about 1100 to the Edwardian conquest of 1282 and shortly after. Writing in an elaborate, archaic style, they composed praise poems and elegies for princes such as Owain Gwynedd and the two Llywelyns, as well as religious verse. Meilyr Brydydd, Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr and Gruffudd ab yr Ynad Coch were among them.
