Robert II of France

972–1031 · 11th century · Also known as Robert the Pious

Robert II, called the Pious, was king of France from 996 to 1031, the son of Hugh Capet, with whom he was crowned in 987. He fought for years to win the Duchy of Burgundy after the death of his uncle Henry the Great in 1002, securing it by about 1005. His marriages brought conflict with the papacy, and his son Henry I succeeded him.
