Santarém, Portugal
Santarém is a city on the Tagus in central Portugal, north-east of Lisbon, above a fertile river plain. As Roman Scallabis it was an administrative centre, and under Muslim rule a frontier fortress that changed hands several times. Afonso I took it for Portugal in a surprise attack in March 1147, shortly before Lisbon, and medieval kings often held their cortes there.
