Shughnan

Also known as Shugnan

Shughnan is a mountain district of the western Pamirs on both banks of the Panj river, divided between Tajikistan, where Khorog is its main town, and Afghanistan. Its people speak Shughni, an Eastern Iranian language, and are mostly Ismaili Muslims. Long ruled by its own shahs under the overlordship of Badakhshan, it was divided along the Panj by the Anglo-Russian Pamir agreement of 1895.
