Social War (357–355 BCE)

357–355 BCE · 4th century BCE

The Social War of 357–355 BCE was fought between Athens and members of the Second Athenian League, led by Chios, Rhodes, Kos and Byzantium, with support from Mausolus of Caria. The rebels defeated the Athenian fleet at Embata, and Athens was forced to recognise their independence. The war left the league greatly weakened just as Philip II of Macedon was rising.
