Syrmia

Also known as Srem, Srijem, Szerém

Syrmia is a fertile region between the Danube and Sava rivers, today divided between Serbia and Croatia. Its Roman city of Sirmium was a major imperial centre, and in the Middle Ages it formed a county of the Kingdom of Hungary. After Ottoman rule it was divided between civil Slavonia and the Military Frontier, and after 1945 most of it went to Serbia's Vojvodina, with a western part in Croatia.
