Teatro di San Carlo

1737 · 18th century

The Teatro di San Carlo is the opera house of Naples, opened on 4 November 1737 by Charles of Bourbon next to the royal palace. It is the oldest opera house in Europe still in continuous use and was a leading centre of Italian opera, with works by Rossini and Donizetti premiered there. After a fire in 1816 it was rebuilt within a year.
