Toghto

1314–1356 · 14th century · Also known as Toqto'a (Yuan chancellor)

Toghto was a Mongol statesman of the Merkit clan who served as chancellor of the Yuan dynasty under Toghon Temür. He sponsored the official histories of the Liao, Jin and Song dynasties and in 1351 launched a huge project to restore the course of the Yellow River, whose forced labour fed popular unrest. In 1354, while besieging Zhang Shicheng at Gaoyou, he was dismissed by court rivals, and he died in exile in 1356.
