African Lakes Company
The African Lakes Company was a Scottish trading company founded in Glasgow in 1878 to support the Presbyterian missions around Lake Malawi and to replace the slave trade with legitimate commerce. From its base at Karonga it fought Swahili-Arab slave traders in the Karonga War of 1887 to 1889 in Ngonde country, helping prepare the way for the British Central Africa Protectorate.
