Battle of Mycale

479 BCE · 5th century BCE · Part of the Greco-Persian Wars

The Battle of Mycale was fought in 479 BCE at Mount Mycale on the coast of Ionia, opposite Samos. A Greek force under the Spartan king Leotychidas and the Athenian Xanthippus landed and destroyed a Persian army and its beached fleet, traditionally on the same day as the victory at Plataea. It ended the Persian invasion of Greece and opened the liberation of Ionia.
