Bremer Vulkan

1893–1997 · 19th century

Bremer Vulkan was a shipbuilding company founded in 1893 at Vegesack, then a town near Bremen. It built merchant ships and, in both world wars, warships and U-boats, and after 1945 grew into a large shipbuilding group. Its collapse in 1996–1997 was one of the largest industrial bankruptcies in post-war Germany and left Bremen with heavy debts.
