Carians
The Carians were the native people of Caria in south-western Asia Minor, speaking an Anatolian language related to Luwian and written in their own alphabet. Greek writers described them as early inhabitants of the Aegean coasts and islands, and they served widely as mercenaries, including in Egypt. Under the Hecatomnid dynasty, notably Mausolus in the fourth century BCE, Caria flourished under Persian rule.
