Clemens August of Bavaria

1700–1761 · 18th century

Clemens August of Bavaria was a Wittelsbach prince who gathered church offices on a grand scale, becoming Archbishop-Elector of Cologne from 1723, Prince-Bishop of Münster, Paderborn, Hildesheim and Osnabrück, and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. He thus ruled a large part of north-western Germany, including the Duchy of Westphalia. He spent lavishly on rococo palaces, among them Augustusburg at Brühl, and on hunting.
