First French Empire

1804–1815 · 19th century · Also known as Napoleonic Empire

The First French Empire was the state ruled by Napoleon from his coronation as emperor in 1804 until 1814, with a brief return in 1815. At its height around 1811 it annexed the Low Countries, the North Sea coast with Bremen and Hamburg, and much of Italy, and dominated most of Europe through allied and client states before defeat in Russia and Germany brought its fall.
