Fitna of al-Andalus

1009–1031 · 11th century

The Fitna of al-Andalus was the civil war that destroyed the Caliphate of Córdoba between 1009 and 1031. It began with a revolt against the Amirid regime and pitted rival Umayyad claimants, Berber troops, Saqaliba commanders and the Hammudids against one another, while Córdoba and Madinat al-Zahra were sacked. In 1031 the caliphate was abolished and al-Andalus fragmented into the taifa kingdoms.
