Gallo-Romans

The Gallo-Romans were the Romanised inhabitants of Gaul from the Roman conquest to the early Middle Ages. Speaking Latin and following Roman law and, by the 5th century, mostly Catholic Christianity, they formed the majority under the Visigothic, Burgundian and Frankish kingdoms, whose kings kept separate laws for them. Their speech developed into French and Occitan.
