Georgios I of Makuria
Georgios I was king of Makuria, the medieval Christian kingdom of Nubia, in the 9th century. In the 830s, as heir to the throne, he travelled to Baghdad and negotiated with the Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tasim over the arrears of the Baqt tribute, which were cancelled. He later reigned for several decades from about 856, a period of peace and prosperity in Makuria.
