Heavy taxation
Heavy taxation is a recurring pattern in which rulers raise tax burdens to fund wars, armies or courts, provoking rural distress, revolt and loss of legitimacy. Excessive demands can erode the economic base on which the state depends. Examples include the Ptolemaic Empire, the late Sasanian Empire, the Almoravid Empire and the Afsharid Empire.
