Islam III Giray

d. 1654 · 17th century

Islam III Giray was khan of Crimea from 1644 to 1654. In 1648 he allied with Bohdan Khmelnytsky's Cossack uprising against Poland-Lithuania, and Tatar forces helped win the battles of Zhovti Vody and Korsun, but he repeatedly made his own terms with the Poles and withdrew at Berestechko in 1651, contributing to the Cossack defeat. The alliance brought the Tatars captives and influence across Ukraine.
