Isle of Lewis

The Isle of Lewis is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, with Stornoway as its main town. It holds the Calanais standing stones, and the Lewis chessmen, carved from walrus ivory in the 12th century, were found there in 1831. It was ruled by the Norse kings of Mann and the Isles until 1266.
