Mount Taygetus

Mount Taygetus is a mountain range in the southern Peloponnese, Greece, rising to about 2,400 metres and separating Laconia from Messenia. Ancient Sparta lay at its eastern foot, and the Spartan conquest of Messenia across the range shaped the city's history. In the Middle Ages it was home to the Slavic Melingoi, and the Byzantine town of Mystras grew on one of its spurs.
