Naucratis

Also known as Naukratis

Naucratis was a Greek trading city in the western Nile Delta of Egypt, founded in the 7th century BCE. Under Pharaoh Amasis in the 6th century it became the only port where Greek merchants were allowed to trade, and cities such as Miletus, Samos, Aegina, Chios and Mytilene kept sanctuaries there, several of them sharing the Hellenion. It was a key channel for exchange between Egypt and the Greek world.
