Shoshenq I

r. c. 943–922 BCE · 10th century BCE · Also known as Sheshonq I, Shishak

Shoshenq I was a chief of the Libyan Meshwesh who became pharaoh around 943 BCE and founded the Twenty-second Dynasty of Egypt, succeeding Psusennes II peacefully. He reunified Egypt by installing his son Iuput as High Priest of Amun at Thebes, ending the independent Theban theocracy. His campaign in Palestine is recorded at Karnak and is usually linked with the biblical Shishak.
