Utu-hengal

r. c. 2120 BCE · 22nd century BCE · Also known as Utu-hegal

Utu-hengal was a king of Uruk in the late 22nd century BCE who led the Sumerian cities against the Gutians. His victory over the Gutian king Tirigan ended Gutian rule in Sumer, and he took the title 'king of the four quarters'. His governor at Ur, Ur-Nammu, possibly his brother, succeeded him and founded the Third Dynasty of Ur.
