Wars of Kappel

1529–1531 · 16th century · Also known as Kappel Wars, Second War of Kappel

The Wars of Kappel were two religious wars between Reformed Zürich and the Catholic cantons of central Switzerland. The first, in 1529, ended without battle in the First Peace of Kappel. In the second, on 11 October 1531, the Catholic forces defeated Zürich at Kappel am Albis, killing the reformer Huldrych Zwingli. The Second Peace of Kappel let each canton decide its own religion.
