Person
Yermak Timofeyevich
Yermak Timofeyevich was a Cossack leader who led an expedition across the Ural Mountains into Siberia in the 1580s, defeating the Khanate of Sibir. His campaigns from 1581 onward opened the way for Russian expansion across northern Asia. Accounts of the Russian Empire treat them as the start of the eastward expansion that eventually carried Russian sovereignty to the Pacific.
