County of Ribagorza

872 CE – 1044 CE (approx.) · capital Roda de Isábena

A Pyrenean county between Aragon and Catalonia, with its bishopric at Roda de Isábena, later absorbed into the Kingdom of Aragon.

Origins

Ribagorza, the valleys of the Isábena and Noguera Ribagorzana, was part of the Frankish County of Toulouse until around 872, when Ramon I established himself as count of Pallars and Ribagorza. After his death Ribagorza went to one of his sons.

Rule and society

The counts ruled a mountain society of herders and farmers, defended by castles against the Muslim lords of Lleida and Barbastro. They founded a bishopric at Roda de Isábena, whose cathedral was consecrated in 956, making it the county's religious centre. The county shared its culture and language with both Aragon and Catalonia.

Decline and legacy

Almanzor's raids weakened the county around 1000. Sancho III of Navarre took control in the 1010s and 1020s, and in 1035 Ribagorza passed with Sobrarbe to his son Gonzalo. After Gonzalo's death around 1045 it went to Ramiro I, joining the Kingdom of Aragon.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
