d. 1007 · 10th century

Abu Rakwa was an Umayyad pretender who led a major revolt against the Fatimid Caliphate from 1004 to 1006. Claiming descent from the Umayyad caliphs of Córdoba, he won over Berber and Arab tribes in Cyrenaica and defeated Fatimid armies before advancing into Egypt. Defeated near Giza in 1006, he fled south towards Nubia, was handed over by the chief of the Banu Kanz and was executed in Cairo in 1007.
