The Arab League is a regional organisation of Arab states founded in Cairo on 22 March 1945 by Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria, with Yemen joining weeks later. It grew to 22 members across the Middle East and North Africa, and works to coordinate the policies of its members, though often divided. In 1961 its troops replaced British forces in Kuwait to deter an Iraqi invasion.
