Bibliotheca Palatina

The Bibliotheca Palatina was the library of the electors palatine at Heidelberg, housed in the Church of the Holy Spirit, and in the sixteenth century one of the finest collections of manuscripts and books in Europe. After Catholic League troops took Heidelberg in 1622 during the Thirty Years' War, Maximilian of Bavaria presented it to Pope Gregory XV, and it was moved to the Vatican Library in 1623. Some 850 German manuscripts were returned to Heidelberg in 1816.
